Federal Control over Elections

The topic of discussion for this Constitution Monday is federal control over elections.  Last week we discussed the Founders’ genius in creating the Electoral College.  There are people in our nation who are working to destroy our Electoral College system.  Chad Kent, author and speaker on the Constitution, believes “they are close to succeeding.”  He believes we should ask one question:  “If we eliminate the Electoral College, what comes next?”

Mr. Kent interviewed Tara Ross, an expert on the Electoral College who is also the author of “Enlightened Democracy.”   Video clips of their interview can be found here; the discussion between Mr. Kent and Ms. Ross is very interesting and I encourage you to pay attention to what they say.

If the Electoral College is destroyed and we go to national elections, the recounts could be horrible.  As the discussion suggests, it could be like Florida in 2000 presidential election – times 50.  The Electoral College is part of our Republic; eliminating it in favor of one person/one vote of a democracy could lead us closer to destruction.  Giving the federal government control over elections would be a very bad idea!
