Support the NRA

The liberty principle for this Freedom Friday is this simple fact:  We need to support the National Rifle Association.  You may ask, why do we need to support the NRA?  We need to support them because we need them to protect our Second Amendment rights.  We need to stand with the NRA in order for the NRA to stand up for us.

We need the NRA because it is an organization made up of people like you and I that is fighting to preserve the Constitution of the United States and the freedoms outlined in it.  NRA leaders go to Congress to lobby for the rights of gun owners.  The NRA has a big enough voice to be heard and often corrects the lies issued by the media.

One such lie reported by NBCNews.com was that the “National Rifle Association would not oppose legislation designed to mandate background checks for all gun purchasers.”  This lie was quickly corrected by Chris W. Cox, NRA-ILA, Executive Director, with the following statement:  “The story posted on NBCNews.com alleges that NRA will not oppose expanding the background check system to include all private firearm sales, `provided the legislation does not require private gun sellers to maintain records of the checks.’  This statement is completely untrue.  The NRA opposes criminalizing private firearm transfers between law-abiding individuals, and therefore opposes an expansion of the background check system.” (See “The Media Lies – Again,” America’s First Freedom, official journal of the NRA, May 2013, p. 19).

The NRA is at the center of the battle to preserve freedom because leaders and members of the NRA know that the Second Amendment protects the rest of the Constitution, including the Bill of Rights and the other Amendments.  The NRA has been fighting to protect this freedom in the courtrooms of our nation as well as working with Congress and correcting the media.
“…The NRA’s past success in preventing or stopping attacks on our basic American freedoms is unrivaled, and the NRA is fully prepared to do it again.

“Actually, the NRA is uniquely poised to protect your freedom because the NR, unlike so many today, isn’t standing in a compromised position.  The NRA is a civil-liberties organization standing steadfast for freedom.  The NRA isn’t partisan or even bipartisan, but is doggedly focused on protecting our individual right to bear arms….

“This clear, principled stand is why so many are joining the NRA in this time when government is weakening individual rights.  It’s also why anti-gun politicians and groups are running a campaign against the NRA, as nothing scares a demagogue more than a principled opponent.  In fact … the Obama administration has been trying to marginalize its opponent (the NRA) with disingenuous character attacks.  What they’re missing – or afraid of – is that the NRA isn’t a single opponent, but millions of Americans who understand and cherish their freedom.”  (See Frank Miniter, “NRA Needs You,” America’s First Freedom, official journal of the NRA, May 2013, pp. 45-47.)

More than 600,000 people have joined the NRA in recent months because they recognize it as an organization that has a “principled stand for freedom.”  The NRA has proven that it will not compromise its principles – the same principles that are important to freedom-loving Americans.  The NRA continues to “put forth common-sense, viable solutions to crime” and has a record for having “the expertise and political will” to continue the fight for American freedom.

The NRA cannot be any stronger than the members who belong to it; therefore, I encourage you to join the NRA and add your voice – and your money – to the battle against tyranny.  The NRA is asking its members to get personally involved in the battle.  They ask us to:
“1) Be Aware:  To keep local, state and federal legislators in tune with the people’s will, you need to stay informed and ready to act…. Thomas Jefferson pointed this out when he said, `If a nation expects to be ignorant and free in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be.’

“2) Write/Call Your Legislators:  When legislation that will either infringe upon your rights or augment them is afoot, you need to act by contacting your representatives….

“3) Don’t-Miss Events:  [Attend] local rallies and other events [that take] place.  When possible, you need to show our elected representatives you’ll vote for your freedom.  Nothing keeps a politician honest like a group of freedom-loving people coming out to show they understand and will vote for their freedom.

“4) Become an NRA Recruiter:  Recruit friends, family and more to the fight for freedom….  Whether they’re gun owners who just haven’t gotten around to joining the NRA or people who don’t understand their freedom, you’ll have the tools you need to teach people about the nature and importance of their rights and to help them join the fight.

“5) Gun Safety Courses:  Whenever possible, teach others gun safety and/or help them find expert instruction….  This will help you connect with other gun owners, help you teach people to be responsible gun owners and will help you bring others into the cause for freedom.  If just a small percentage of NRA members do this much, the strength of our freedom won’t be in question and we’ll take big steps toward using our freedom to guard against the few who would do us harm.”  (See “NRA Needs You,” p. 47.)

As members of the NRA, we do not stand alone in the fight against bad legislation and media lies.   Neither the politicians in Washington, D.C., nor the main stream media are interested in preserving freedom; they are only interested in controlling ordinary Americans.  Gun owners continue to face a legislative and media onslaught; therefore, we continue to need the powers of the NRA to lead the fight.

I am now a life-time member of the NRA, and I urge you to contact the NRA http://home.nra.org/membership to become a member also.  I belong to the NRA because I believe we must fight for the right to keep and bear arms in order to remain a free nation.  I believe that our children and grandchildren have the right to live in freedom.  I know that freedom is the solution to obtaining true happiness and that we must keep our right to keep and bear arms in order to stay free.
