Freedom to Fly the Flag

The liberty principle for this Freedom Friday is the simple fact that Americans should be free to fly the Stars and Stripes in the United States of America whenever and wherever they choose within reason, particularly on our own property.  I believe that if the flag of a nation “offends” people living within that nation, those offended people should live elsewhere.

A school official used “safety” as well as fear of “offense” for some people; he ordered a student to stop flying the Stars and Stripes from his vehicle and even went so far as to remove the bolts holding the flag in place on the truck.  The 18-year-old senior was upset with the treatment and wrote about it on his Facebook page.  Other students picked up on the problem and began flying flags from their vehicles, and a group of veterans supported the move by the students.  The school official had to backpedal on his order because of the “outstanding display of patriotism” shown by the 70 plus students flying the nation’s flag as long as they did not create a “driving hazard.”  A member of the state highway patrol stated that the flags were legal.

We must defend and protect our right to fly our American flags.  We must make a stand just as the above mentioned high school students did.  Maybe there is hope for our nation when the young people understand the value of freedom to fly the flag.
