More IRS Problems

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is going after churches.  An IRS refusal to release documents has brought another lawsuit.  Judicial Watch “filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia; the lawsuit was filed on behalf of the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) to obtain the release of documents regarding the [IRS’s] recent decision … to reevaluate criteria for determining whether churches and other nonprofit organizations can claim tax-exempt status….”

Christiana Holcomb, litigation counsel for ADF, “The IRS has no business threatening churches on behalf of the anti-religious crusaders at Freedom from Religion Foundation….  The IRS must come clean, be accountable to the American people, and reveal the details of the secret deal it cut with the atheist group.  The IRS pattern of unlawfully using its power to target and punish ideological opponents and hiding information that Americans have a right to know must end immediately.”

A statement by Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, included, “It is an honor for Judicial Watch to represent Alliance Defending Freedom, which is so effective as a protector of the First Amendment, which recognizes the truth of God-given rights of Americans to both freely exercise their religion and participate in politics….  The IRS is using a lot of energy to cover-up details of its illicit targeting of churches.  Violating FOIA law comes at great taxpayer expense.”

We should all be grateful that Judicial Watch is protecting our First Amendment rights and particularly from the IRS!
