Conservative DACA Bill

There a conservative bill in the U.S. House of Representatives to deal with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). DACA is an immigration policy that allowed some individuals who were brought to the United States illegally as minors to receive deferred action from deportation and to be eligible to work in the United States.

According to Will Racke at The Daily Signal, the Securing America’s Future Act “gives legal status to certain younger illegal immigrants in exchange for a host of conservative immigration reforms.” This bill satisfies the three demands of President Donald Trump in exchange for amnesty for DACA recipients: funds for the border wall, limits on chain migration, and an end to the Diversity Visa Lottery. Racke quoted CNN as reporting that a steering committee made the following statement.

The Securing America’s Future Act is the framework to strengthen border security, increase interior enforcement and resolve the DACA situation. … We believe an eventual stand alone floor vote is essential. We oppose any process for a DACA solution that favors a backroom deal with Democrats over regular order in the House.

Racke writes that the Securing America’s Future Act “goes beyond the Trump administration’s DACA demands. The bill tacks on mandatory e-Verify, punishments for sanctuary cities, tighter asylum standards, and significant cuts to legal immigration levels.”

Conservatives are pushing Speaker Paul Ryan to bring the bill up for a vote in the House, even though they realize that it mostly likely will not pass the Senate. They believe that it is a good place for conservatives to start working on reforming immigration laws.
