Freedom from Democrat Obstruction

The liberty principle for this Freedom Friday is the simple fact that Democrats have been obstructing Donald Trump since he became President. Whatever Trump wants, they are against. It does not seem to matter what it is, or even if they were for the proposal before Trump mentioned it. They are against Trump, and they do not seem to care what happens to the country while they try to destroy him.

The latest example happened today. Trump announced a new proposal that would reform the nation’s system of legal immigration. In doing so, the United States would end the policy of familial connections and replace it with a policy of bringing immigrants into our nation who are prepared to help make America even greater.

Trump announced that America would welcome immigrants who had prior education, job training, and useful skills – plus the ability to sustain themselves without relying on U.S. taxpayers. The plan would use a point system that would be based on certain requirements. I understand that one of the requirements is the ability to speak and write English.

The President said that “about 12 percent of immigrants are admitted based on employment and skills, while 66 percent are admitted based on family connections inside the U.S.” Trump’s plan would flip those numbers – 60 percent based on merit and skill and 30 percent for mere familial relations, otherwise known as “chain migration.”

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-California) heard the President say “merit” and immediately went ballistic. She claims that “merit” means the same thing as “condescending,” but she could not explain exactly why. According to The Hill, Pelosi said the following:

We have to, I believe, come to comprehensive immigration reform. I think the president knows that….

I know that on the Republican side of the aisle there is a recognition that we have to have comprehensive immigration reform … but that we have to do it in a way that secures our border, has a path to citizenship, respects the value of family to us, that has certain principles that we would agree to.

We can see from that last paragraph that Pelosi has no intention of doing what is right for Americans. She admits that we need to secure the border, but she wants to grant citizenship to the very people who cross the border illegally. She also shows that she has greater respect for the families of the illegal immigrants than she has for American families.

Pelosi claims that her caucus would “welcome” a briefing from the White House on the plan followed by a discussion, but she undermines any such discussion with her case against the word “merit, saying that “It is really a condescending word.”

Are they saying family is without merit? Are they saying most of the people who’ve ever come to the United States in the history of our country, are without merit, because they don’t have an engineering degree?

Speaker Pelosi either has a few screws loose in her brain, or she has no intention of working with the President. Most Americans know what the President was saying, and most Americans recognize that Democrats are stonewalling border security while thousands of illegal aliens cross the border every day.

Of course, families have merit because the family is the core unit of society. However, this does not mean that we have to invite every family in the world into our nation. There is absolutely nothing “condescending” about saying that we want people to come to our nation who will add to the greatness of the nation rather than to the welfare rolls. If people want to come to the United States, they should have to meet a high bar. They need to at least speak English and be prepared to provide for themselves.
