Where Is American Justice?

It finally happened! A federal judge ordered Stephen K. Bannon to report to jail by July 1. Bannon is a former Trump adviser and the host of “War Room.” According to Joseph MacKinnon at The Blaze, Bannon spoke outside the courthouse today. 'They're not going to shut up MAGA!' … all of this is about one thing. This is about shutting down the MAGA movement, shutting down grassroots conservatives, shutting down President Trump.

Merrick Garland, Lisa Monaco, the entire Justice Department – they’re not going to shut up Trump. They’re not going to shut up Navarro. They’re not going to shut up Bannon. And they’re certainly not going to shut up MAGA….

We’re gonna win at the Supreme Court…. There’s not a jail built, not a prison built that can shut me up.

MacKinnon reminded his readers that Democrats and elements of the Biden Department of Justice are not imprisoned when they ignore subpoenas by House Republicans. However, Republicans and Trump supporters are imprisoned when they do the same thing.

Imprisonment for contempt of Congress is rare. Prior to the imprisonment of Peter Navarro and Steve Bannon, it has been approximately forty years since anyone was imprisoned for contempt of Congress.  According to Farnoush Amiri at the Associated Press wrote the following in November 2021 when Bannon was indicted. Stephen K. Bannon’s indictment on contempt of Congress charges is the nation’s first since 1983, and his appearance in federal court Monday provided a rare glimpse of one of U.S. lawmakers’ politically messiest and least-used powers.

The last successful prosecution on contempt charges reaches all the way back to Watergate and its aftermath, when G. Gordon Liddy was convicted of and Richard Kleindienst pleaded guilty to refusing to answer congressional questions.

I find it interesting that both the contempt of Congress charges – Liddy and Kleindienst and Bannon and Navarro – were done by Democrat-led Department of Justice. Do you recognize your country anymore? We used to be a nation of fundamental rights granted to us by God, and we lived under a system of laws that promised justice. Not social justice, but justice justice. Can I ask you what American justice even means anymore?

Was it justice when Steve Bannon was sentenced to four months in prison for contempt of Congress? We’ve seen people defy Congress for decades, but no one ever goes to jail…. The last time someone went to jail for this was back in 1961. Before that … 1948! It’s rare, even though we’ve seen people openly defy Congress time after time.

Selectively deciding whether or not they’ll decide to enforce the law isn’t justice…. [Bannon will do] four months in jail, but in January 2021, the former FBI lawyer that got caught falsifying evidence to spy on a member of President Trump’s staff was spared prison and given a minor slap on the wrist.

Amiri and Beck give different dates for the previous contempt of Congress charges. Therefore, I cannot say for sure which is correct. However, I do know of the difference in the manner Democrats and Republicans are treated.

Bannon and Navarro did not object to the congressional subpoenas to cover up a crime. Their objections to testifying before Congress came because they felt that they should have executive privilege. They were advisors to President Donald Trump, and they thought that their conversations with a president could remain confidential.
