There are
apparently many people living in America who do not like freedom, liberty, and
independence. We often hear individuals complain about the “limits” of our
constitutional law and the “evilness” of America. Maybe they should have the
opportunity to visit with Mohimanul Alam Bhuiya.
Bhuiya, a Muslim, is a
privileged American who was blessed to attend Columbia University but never
graduated. He seemed to have everything going right in his life before he “became
deeply interested in the Islamic State.” He spent so much time on the Internet
researching the Islamic State that the Joint Terrorism Task Force visited him
in New York. They wanted to know why he was so interested, but he reassured
them that he did not have the money to travel to Syria and had no idea what he
would do there if he did go. He flew to Istanbul a few days later, went to
Syria, and joined the Islamic State.
A few months later Bhuiya had
seen all of the evil that he wanted to see and sent an email to the FBI
requesting rescue. Before the FBI could verify his identity, Bhuiya escaped
into Turkey and went to the U.S. consulate. He was promptly arrested upon his
return to the USA and “charged with providing material support and receiving
military training from the Islamic State.” He pleaded guilty to both charges in
November 2014 and faces up to 25 years in prison. He will not be sentenced
until “his cooperation is complete.”
Bhuiya was with ISIS for four
months. He wanted out of the organization because he could see “madness” in
their eyes. He was not acquainted with the type of Islam practiced by ISIS and
wanted no part of the “evil.”
Maybe there is a way that the United
States could use Bhuiya’s experience with other Americans who think they want
to join ISIS. Could his personal story as a motivational speaker help other
young men and women see clear enough to reconsider their plans to join ISIS?
Someone needs to give them the truth. Could that someone be Bhuiya?
