Freedom from Illegal Immigrants

            The liberty principle for this Freedom Friday is the simple fact that the United States now has a President who understands the problems involved with people entering or staying in the United States illegally. President Trump campaigned on a plan to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, enforcing immigration laws, and deporting undocumented people living in the United States illegally.

            When he spoke to the joint session of Congress on Tuesday, President Trump reiterated his intent to continue doing exactly what he said that he would do. He intends to build a wall to secure the southern border of the United States. He intends to enforce the nation’s immigration laws. He intends to remove the “bad” illegal aliens.

            Daniel Davis at The Daily Signal posted an article about the issues that President Trump got right in his talk, and he included immigration issues. He quoted President Trump as saying that “Enforcement of our immigration laws ‘will raise wages, help the unemployed, save billions of dollars, and make our communities safer for everyone. We want all Americans to succeed – but that can’t happen in an environment of lawless chaos. We must restore integrity and the rule of law to our borders.”

            President Trump challenged the members of Congress: “To any in Congress who do not believe we should enforce our laws, I would ask you this question: What would you say to the American family that loses their jobs, their income, or a loved one, because America refused to uphold its laws and defend its borders?” (Davis)

            Continuing his remarks about immigration, President Trump made it clear that he did not want terrorists entering our country. He also insisted that people who cannot honestly and completely be vetted should not be allowed to enter our country. Again from The Daily Signal, the President said, “It is not compassionate, but reckless, to allow uncontrolled entry from places where proper vetting cannot occur. Those given the high honor of admission to the United States should support this country and love its people and its values.” (Davis)

            President Trump is also concerned about reforming our current system for legal immigration. He wants to change the system to a merit-based one. In other words, we will stop allowing the poor citizens who drain our public resources and admit people who can provide for themselves and “support themselves financially.” He said that doing so would save money, raise the wages of workers, and help families that are currently struggling to “enter the middle class.” (Davis)

            Part of reforming our current immigration system will most likely involve legalizing good people who came to the U.S. illegally. I have no problem with making them legal, but I have a big problem if the U.S. provides a way to full citizenship. I do not believe anyone should be rewarded for breaking the laws of our nation. If anyone wants to become a U.S. citizen, they must immigrate legally!
