Individual Worth

            Families, communities, and nations are strengthened as individuals exercise faith in Jesus Christ. This is the third in a series on the Young Women values. The first post in the series can be found here. It discusses the Young Women values and the Personal Progress program that assists women of all ages to develop these attributes. Each value is represented by a specific color.

            The third Young Women value is Individual worth, and it is represented by the color red, the color of Christ’s blood which was shed for our sins during His atoning sacrifice. “The color for Individual Worth is red. Red reminds us of the blood of Christ. The Savior believed that there wasn’t any price too high to pay for us. He loved us so much that He willingly paid for us with his blood and His own life. He bled from every pore for us. He paid the infinite price. We are of great worth to the Lord and we should be to ourselves as well.” 

            Doctrine and Covenants 18:10 states that “Remember the worth of souls is great in the sight of God.” President Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the First Presidency says, “This is a paradox of man: compared to God, man is nothing; yet we are everything to God.” 

            The red color that represents Individual Worth reminds each of us that the Savior atoned for us as individuals. He paid the price for your sins and for my sins. Each of us is important to Him. He loves us, and Heavenly Father loves us. They want us to return to their presence and live with them for eternity. Each of us has great worth to them even though we are nothing in comparison to them.

            The knowledge that we are important to God should make us feel good about ourselves. It should also help us to remember that every mortal being is important to God, and He expects us to treat each other as sisters and brothers. He desires that we love and care for each other. As we do this we can strengthen our families, communities, and nations.
