Why do Americans
celebrate the fourth of July? I hope that all my readers know the reason we
celebrate this holiday, but I recently learned that many people who live in the
United States do not know the significance of this day or any of the important
facts. This video would be hilarious if it were not so sad.
Then there are the Americans who fight against those patriots who desire to fly the Stars and Stripes or
show the colors. Bob Michaelis is a Marine veteran in Lexington, South
Carolina. He owns a mattress company and desired to honor the troops with a
show of patriotism by lining the front of his store with Old Glory. He had ten American flags up when he was
visited by the chief of police to have a “conversation.” It seems that the town
of Lexington has an ordinance about flying flags and Michaelis’ display went
against that ordinance.
Residents of Newport Beach,
California, wanted to decorate in honor of Independence Day. They “stretched
red, white and blue triangular flags from home to home to express their American
pride. Code enforcement officers said the decorations “violated a city
ordinance” and told the residents to take down their decorations. The residents
are ignoring the warning.
Gersh Kuntzman, a columnist for
The New York Daily News, wants Major League Baseball to stop playing “God Bless
America” at baseball games because the song might offend someone.
Why do you celebrate the fourth
of July? Do you know the reason for this national holiday? Could you answer
questions about the basic facts of Independence Day? I suggest you brush up on the
facts in case you are caught on camera someday looking like a fool!
Happy Independence Day! May God
continue to bless the United States of America!
