George H.W. Bush

It is only fitting that my VIP for this week is former President George H. W. Bush passed away Friday evening at age 94. There have been many tributes paid to President Bush, but none could be greater or more important to him than the one given by his son, George W. Bush.

James A. Baker served as Bush 41’s chief of staff and secretary of state. He was also among the close friends who were with the former President during his final days at his home in Houston. Baker said that the passing of the former President was “a very gentle and peaceful passing” and “a sweet situation.” He also shared the final conversation between father and son.            Bush 43 was in Dallas and called on the speaker phone to speak with his father. According to one report, Bush 43 told his father that he loved him and that he was a “wonderful dad.” According to another report, Baker says that the son told the father, “Dad, I love you and I will see you on the other side,” and the father simply replied, “I love you.” Those were the last words spoken by Bush 41.

The former President will be honored at a state funeral in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, December 5, 2018. There his son, Bush 43, will give the eulogy, President Donald Trump and the First Lady Melania will be in attendance. However, the second greatest compliment given to Bush 41 was given by the men and women who have protected him for more nearly 40 years. Accompanying a short video on Twitter, the Secret Service gave the following tribute to the man they call “Timberwolf.” “The Secret Service sends our heartfelt condolences on the passing of Former President George H.W. Bush. Timberwolf, you defined patriotism and leadership throughout your life of service to this country and you will be sorely missed.”
