My VIP for this week is Larry Elder, a black conservative who is campaigning to become the next governor of California. Election Day is September 14. The election has two parts: the first part will determine if incumbent Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, remains in office or is recalled. The second part determines who replaces Newsom. Elder is currently sitting at the top of the field. If Newsom is recalled, Elder will be the next governor if he pulls the most votes.
Elder, age 69, is a fast-talking
radio talk show host and former attorney. He is single. If Elder is elected, he
could change the balance of the Senate if Senator Dianne Feinstein retires,
dies, or becomes incapacitated. Since she is already struggling with declining mental
health, any of the three scenarios could take place. Elder has declared that he
would choose a conservator to replace Feinstein if given the opportunity.
Elder
considers Donald Trump to be his favorite U.S. President but only after
President Ronald Reagan. His policies are similar to those of Reagan, who was
also Governor of California. Reagan was a good Governor and a good President – the
people of California could do much worse than to elect a conservative who has
similar policies.
