Once again we
celebrate Independence Day, the day the Founders declared independence from
Great Britain. The movie Independence Day was a blockbuster movie
that has more and more meaning as time passes.
Towards the end of the movie and with all humankind facing extinction,
United States President Thomas J. Whitmore (Bill Pullman) took the microphone
to deliver an inspirational speech that has few rivals in movies.
“Good morning. Good morning.
In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around
the world, and you will be launching the largest aerial battle in the history
of mankind. Mankind, that word should have new meaning for all of us
today. We can’t be consumed by our petty
differences any more. We will be united
in our common interest. Perhaps it’s fate
that today is the Fourth of July, and you will once again be fighting for our
freedom. Not from tyranny, oppression,
or persecution, but from annihilation.
We’re fighting for our right to live, to exist – and should we win the
day, the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as
the day when the world declared in one voice, `We will not go quietly into the
night! We will not vanish without a
fight! We’re going to live on, we’re
going to survive.’ Today we celebrateour independence day!” (July 4, 1996)
America would be
in better condition today if our Commander-in-Chief was a braver man, one more
like “President Whitmore.” The time may
come – and soon – when Americans and all other lovers of freedom will have to
join in battle to fight for our survival.
I am not worried about aliens from space attacking us, but I am
concerned about people who claim to be a “religion of peace” but threaten all
who do not believe as they do – plus other people who threaten our liberty and
independence. We too need to unite in
order to battle our common foes.
Happy Independence Day! Enjoy your freedom, liberty, and independence
while you still have it!
