A Little Child Shall Lead Them

My VIP for this week is an eight-year-old boy by the name of Christian who chose to act like a follower of Christ and show kindness. On the first day of school Christian noticed another boy crying in a corner at the Minneha Elementary School in Wichita, Kansas. The crying boy was Connor Crites, a child with autism. Connor was overwhelmed with the “excitement and stimulation” of the new school year, and he did not know how to handle the whole situation.

Christian, a fellow second-grade student, saw Connor curled up in the corner. “Without a word, Christian walked over to Connor and took his hand.” Connor, obviously relieved to have a friend, clung to Christian’s hand as they walked into the school.

Obviously, both mothers are pleased with what happened. Christian’s mother is undoubtedly pleased to see her son exhibit such kindness to another student. Connor’s mother is relieved that her son has a good friend at school.

There is small mention of race in the article, but the picture shows that Christian is black and that Connor is white. Does race matter to either boy? No. They are friends who can support each other, and they have a message for all of us. Their message is, “Be kind” to all people. If all Americans would simply show kindness to others, there would be greater unity in our nation.
