Why Does President Nelson Encourage Us to Focus on Jesus Christ?

My VIP for this week is Jesus Christ. He is the Most Important Person every week, but it is only fitting that we honor Him during this week between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday. Since his ordination, President Russell M. Nelson, President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has increasingly encouraged Church members and their friends to focus on the Savior.

Without going into dates, here are some of the ways that President Nelson has focused the thoughts of members on Jesus Christ:

·         Encouraged families to follow Christ by studying the scriptures through the Come, Follow Me program.

·         Emphasized the name of Jesus Christ in the name of the Church by encouraging members and media to drop the word “Mormon” when discussing the Church or its members. It is The Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-day Saints and members are known as latter-day saints.

·         Changed the logo for the Church of Jesus Christ to be a picture of the risen Christ

·         Released special Easter messages. His 2023 Easter message can be viewed at this site.

After the close of General Conference on Sunday, President Nelson tweeted this message: “On the cross, Jesus forgave His tormentors. This Easter season, think of someone whom you should forgive. I promise that the Prince of Peace will bring you peace.

We have all been hurt in some way by someone. The hurt may have been intentional, or it may have been unintended. It is important for us to forgive all who have hurt us, or disappointed us, or betrayed us, or lied about us. Even though difficult, we need to forgive others for their words and/or actions because unforgiveness will eat at us and deprive us of blessings. President Nelson explained it in this way.

However, not forgiving others is poison for us. Grudges weigh us down. Angry disagreements separate us. Animosity and hatred can divide families. And yet the Savior’s counsel is clear: If ye forgive men their trespasses, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you.
