Freedom of Education

            The liberty principle for this Freedom Friday has to do with the need for freedom of education. Parents should be able to choose where their children go to school and what they are taught. This is not happening in much of the nation.

            Some of the parents who are seeking freedom of religion for their children are the active-duty men and women in the military services of our nation. A new report by EdChoice, “a nonprofit organization that promotes educational choice through research and advocacy” has published a new report.

            Kelly McDonald posted an article at The Daily Signal explaining why military parents want freedom of education.  He begins his article by saying, “While protecting American freedom, the active-duty men and women of our armed forces want educational freedom as well.” He continues by stating what is included in the new report.  

The report includes results of a survey of nearly 1,300 current members of the U.S. military and their spouses, noting their impressions of military life and their preferences related to K-12 education.

According to the report, service members encounter frequent stress and separation, and concerns about educating their children amid so much change can weigh on them.

Education choice can help to reduce the uncertainly and apprehension associated with frequent moves and deployments. Having options other than an assigned district school in an appointed location can put military families more at ease….

Education is a big deal for military parents, and they want education options that offer more freedom and flexibility.

            Parents have the strict responsibility to watch over the education of their children. This responsibility is even more vital because certain activists groups are attempting to gain control of the nation by indoctrinating the rising generation. More and more parents are choosing to home school their children in order to have better control on what their children learn. McDonald explains more about why military families want freedom of education.   

 

Military families overwhelmingly support education choice. Nearly three-quarters (72%) support education savings accounts (ESAs); two thirds (66%) support vouchers; and over two-thirds (67%) support charter schools….     

Education savings accounts provide more choice and flexibility

 to families than standard voucher programs, which target only school tuition.

Additionally, more military families are choosing to bypass outside schooling altogether in favor of homeschooling, which can offer a consistent, family-centered approach to learning….

Military parents, like all other parents, want what is best for their children. They want to be empowered to make the best choices for their kids’ education and to ensure their safety and well-being.

Expanding education choice options to all parents frees them of unsatisfactory school assignments and broadens learning possibilities for all children.

            The world is different now than when I was in school and even than when my children were in school. The physical/emotional dangers that students face now are vastly stronger. Parents should have greater control of the educational circumstances of their children.
