The Biden administration went to court to fight for the ability to end the “Remain in Mexico” policy put in place by the Trump administration policy. The Supreme Court ruled in June that Biden had the authority to end the program. Yet, “Remain in Mexico” continues. The reason is political – Biden’s political future.
According to Allen Orr, American
Immigration Lawyers Association immediate past president in an interview with The
Daily Caller News Foundation, Biden’s political future “could be at risk by
the potential for more chaos at the border.”
I think the Biden administration is being
overly cautious with regards to ending the program as they don’t want to have
anything to happen at the southern border that would seem that things were out
of control. Politically, that would not be a great thing with the midterms
coming up and his approval ratings being so low….
I also think that he has been working with
private and public partnerships to sort of address the immigration issue as we’ve
seen an agreement reached with Mexico just a few weeks ago where they were
going to put millions of dollars into helping ensure an orderly border between
the United States and Mexico….
Orr is not the only person that
believes that keeping “Remain in Mexico” is political. Rep. Henry Cuellar
(D-Texas) knows a lot about the border problem because his district is along
the southern border. He also told The Daily Caller News Foundation that the
lack of change is political.
I think they, especially the career
people, not the political people, know that there are some things that will
slow people down and [the Migrant Protection Protocols] is one of them. They
probably don’t want to say that publicly.
They unfortunately have to follow the
instructions that come from the top, and I would say even [Homeland Security
Secretary Alejandro] Mayorkas understands this and understands that we got to
slow down the number of people, but you know, everybody gets instructions from
higher up places at the White House. So, I think they probably are trying to
slow this as much as possible...
Even though “Remain in Mexico” is
still active, it is not having much impact. “CBP statistics show that U.S.
Customs and Border Protection expelled 2,097 illegal aliens in June, 2,129 in
May, and 1,725 in April.” Those statistics are a drop in the bucket when more
than 200,000 are encountered each month at the border.
Texas and Arizona are border states
that have dealt with most of the migrants crossing the border in horde-like
numbers. The governors of Texas and Arizona started sending busloads of illegal
immigrants to Washington, D.C., for Biden to have a taste of problems faced by
the border states.
On July 28th, D.C. Mayor
Muriel Bowser requested help from the National Guard. She claimed that her city
had reached a “tipping point” with a little over 5,000 illegal migrants. Her “very
significant issue” seems insignificant compared to that of Texas and Arizona.
The Biden administration has been
flying illegal migrants to New York City for a number of months. New York City
Mayor Eric Adams is also complaining about the numbers of illegal immigrants.
Adams wanted to give illegal migrants the right to vote, but he is now begging
for help from the federal government.
Just two weeks ago on July 19,
Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas claimed that the border was “secure.” Now that
Democrat mayors in Washington, D.C., and New York City are dealing with too
many illegal migrants, they are realizing the truth of the claims coming from
the border states. Yet, 5,000 is a small number compared to the 2 million
encounters at the southern border since October 1, 2021.
Meanwhile, the United Nations has
described the U.S.-Mexico border as “the deadliest land crossing in the world.”
There were 728 migrant deaths last year while attempting to cross the border. In
addition to illegal migrants, the drugs are also flowing across the border with
“hundreds of pounds of fentanyl are seized each month.”
Biden could put Trump policies back
in place, and the flow of migrants would slow immediately. In addition, any
talk of giving amnesty and citizenship to the hordes of illegals flooding our
border should cease immediately.
