Democrats are doing their best to
keep abortion in the fore front of the minds of their voters. President Joe
Biden announced today that he would send a bill to Congress to codify Roe v.
Wade if Democrats keep the House and the Senate in November. Gilliam Richards
wrote the following about Biden’s announcement.
Biden remarked at the Democrat National
Committee event this Tuesday that the Supreme Court’s June 24 Dobbs v.
Jackson Women’s Health decision violated women’s’ “fundamental right” to
abortion. “Fifty years of constitutional precedent was overturned,” Biden said
of the Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion
on-demand in all 50 states.
“We’re only 22 days away from the most
consequential election in history… in recent history at least,” Biden said at
the event, hosted in Washington, D.C.
Biden cited Republicans’ efforts, such as
those of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, to ban abortion nationwide.
“If such a bill were to pass in the next several years, I’ll veto it,” Biden
said to a cheering crowd.
Biden was not the only Democrat
making statements today. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) could
not be left out of the action, so he released the following statement after Biden
spoke:
The choice for America’s future is clear
as day: elect more MAGA Republicans if you want to see a nationwide ban on
abortion; if you want to see doctors and women arrested; if you want to see no
exceptions for rape or incest. Elect more pro-choice Democrats to save Roe and
protect a woman’s right to make their own decisions about their health and
their body.
Not to be outdone by the President
and the Senate Majority Leader, the Department of Justice changed another
pro-life activist with violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act
(FACE Act). According to Mary Margaret
Olohan, this activist is part of the pro-life group that found the aborted bodies
of preemie-sized babies outside an abortion clinic in Washington, D.C. Olohan
wrote the following:
A
D.C. federal grand jury’s two-count superseding indictment charged 25-year-old
Herb Geraghty with conspiracy against rights and FACE Act offenses for blocking
the entrance to an abortion clinic in October 2020, the Justice Department said
in a release. The pro-life activists had blockaded the entrance to the
abortion clinic, the D.C.-based Washington Surgi-Clinic, to “prevent women from
entering the clinic to murder their children.”
“This
is a clear abuse of power and a sign that the Biden administration is using the
Department of Justice to attack political targets—particularly those of us who
believe in the right to life for all human beings,” Geraghty, a member of the
Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising, told The Daily Signal.
Geraghty
has “not yet” been arrested, the activist said, adding: “I am hoping they let
me self-surrender, but no confirmation either way yet.”
A
federal grand jury had returned an indictment on March 24 alleging that Lauren
Handy, Jonathan Darnel, Jay Smith, Paulette Harlow, Jean Marshall, John
Hinshaw, Heather Idoni, William Goodman, and Joan Bell were “engaged in a
conspiracy to create a blockade” at Washington Surgi-Clinic.
The
Supreme Court in overturning Roe v. Wade could not find any mention of abortion
or the right to abortion in the Constitution, so they sent the issue back to
the States. Does not Biden understand the ramifications of the ruling?
Apparently not!
Conservatives
were quick to jump into the abortion fray today. March for Life President
Jeanne Mancini provided a prepared statement saying the following: “President
Biden’s desperate attempt to sway voters by pushing painful abortions is clear
evidence of how out of touch he is. Ninety percent of Americans reject Biden’s
view that abortion should be legal up until birth for any reason – paid for by
taxpayers.”
Mancini
was off by 9% according to polls. A May 2022 poll showed that 17% of Americans
think abortions should be legal at any point in a pregnancy, and a Pew Research
Poll during the same month found 19% of Americans think abortion should be
legal in all cases.
Mancini
was not the only one making pro-life statements. Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of
Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America stated the following:
Doubling
down on an extreme agenda of abortion on demand until birth won’t stop
Democrats form losing Congress, even with the abortion industry spending record
sums to elect them. Biden’s party is on the wrong side and stunningly out of
touch. Clear majorities of Americans … support commonsense limits on abortion,
including a minimum federal standard to stop brutal late-term abortions when
unborn babies feel pain.
Dannenfelser
encouraged pro-life Republicans to continue their efforts to expose the extreme
stance that Democrats have on abortion. “The stakes of the midterm elections
could not be higher. President Biden is making clear today that if Democrats control
Congress in 2023, they will destroy the filibuster and pass their Abortion on
Demand Until Birth Act to mandate abortion on demand in all 50 states.”
