We The People

The United States of America was founded on the idea that the people elected leaders and the leaders were responsible to the people.  The federal government has consistently and continually grown larger over the years.  Our leaders use the power and authority of their positions to enrich and empower themselves, and they act as though the citizens were their servants.  This is not the way our Founding Fathers envisioned our nation.

President Abraham Lincoln understood the Founders reasoning:  “We the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the Courts, not to overthrow the Constitution but to overthrow the men who would pervert the Constitution.”

Other people also understand the way the government is supposed to work.  CharlieReese, a former columnist for the Orlando Sentinel newspaper, was a journalist for 49 years, and he wrote the following article for his last column before retiring.  His article shows that Charlie gained wisdom and insight as he grew older.  He is absolutely right in his comments.  Americans have grown lazy and want the government to take care of them.  Until the people accept personal responsibility for themselves and their families and become accountable for their actions, the government will continue to grow.  As government grows, it demands more taxes to pay for it.  We need to fire all of them and hire new ones who will show more respect to their bosses!

545 vs. 300,000,000 People

Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.
Have you ever wondered, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, WHY do we have deficits?
Have you ever wondered, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, WHY do we have inflation and high taxes?
You and I don’t propose a federal budget.  The President does.
You and I don’t have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations.  The House of Representatives does.
You and I don’t write the tax code.  Congress does.
You and I don’t set fiscal policy.  Congress does.
You and I don’t control monetary policy.  The Federal Reserve Bank does.
One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one President, and nine Supreme Court justices equates to 545 human beings out of the 300 million who are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.
I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress.  In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional  duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank.
I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason.  They have no legal authority.  They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman, or a President to do one cotton-picking thing.  I don’t care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash.  The politician has the power to accept or reject it.  No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator’s responsibility to determine how he votes.
Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault.  They cooperate in this common con regardless of party.
What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall.  No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President for creating deficits.  (The President can only propose a budget.  He cannot force the Congress to accept it.)
The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes.  Who is the speaker of the House?  (John Boehner.  He is the leader of the majority party.  He and fellow House members, not the President, can approve any budge they want.)  If the President vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to.  [The House has passed a budget but the Senate has not approved a budget in over three years.  The President’s proposed budgets have gotten almost unanimous rejections in the Senate in that time.]
It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million cannot replace 545 people who stand convicted – by present facts – of incompetence and irresponsibility.  I can’t think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people.  When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist.
If the tax code is unfair, it’s because they want it unfair.
If the budget is in the red, it’s because they want it in the red.
If the Army & Marines are in Iraq and Afghanistan, it’s because they want them in Iraq and Afghanistan.
If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it’s because they want it that way.
There are no insoluble government problems.
Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power.
Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like `the economy,’ `inflation,’ or `politics’ that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do.
Those 545 people, and they alone, are responsible.  They, and they alone, have the power.
They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses.  Provided the voters have the gumption to manage their own employees.  We should vote all of them out of office and clean up their mess!

Tax his land,
Tax his bed,
Tax the table,
At which he’s fed.

Tax his tractor,
Tax his mule,
Teach him taxes
Are the rule.

Tax his work,
Tax his play.
He works for
Peanuts anyway!

Tax his cow,
Tax his goat,
Tax his pants,
Tax his coat.

Tax his ties,
Tax his shirt,
Tax his work,
Tax his dirt.

Tax his tobacco,
Tax his drink,
Tax him if he
Tries to think.

Tax his cigars,
Tax his beers,
If he cries
Tax his tears.

Tax his car,
Tax his gas,
Find other ways
To tax his ass.

Tax all he has
Then let him know
That you won’t be done
Till he has no dough.

When he screams and hollers,
Then tax him some more.
Tax him till
He’s good and sore.

Then tax his coffin,
Tax his grave,
Tax the sod in
Which he’s laid.

Put these words
Upon his tomb,
`Taxes drove me
To my doom.’

When he’s gone,
Do not relax.
It’s time to apply
The inheritance tax.

Taxes

The topic of discussion for this Constitution Monday comes from Article I.8.1: "The people of the states hereby delegate to the federal Congress the power to collect taxes, duties, imposts, and excises."

This provision gave Congress the power to collect general taxes for the first time from either the states or the people. It also gave Congress the power to collect duties on imports, exports, or manufactured items, imposts or a tax similar to duties, and an excise tax or federal sales tax. Taxes consist of both indirect and direct taxes: "direct taxes are levied directly against individuals and their personal property and cannot be passed on to anyone else" while indirect taxes "are much less painful to collect" because they "can be passed on to the person who is the final purchaser of the goods." (See W. Cleon Skousen, The Making of America - The Substance and Meaning of the Constitution, p 372.)

According to Skousen, the Founders expected that the federal government would be able to operate during ordinary times on the import duties, but they also realized that war or other emergency would require direct taxes from the people and their property. Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson were the two Presidents who were most successful in handling the power to tax. Jefferson was able to operate the federal government on the import revenue. He repealed excise taxes, abolished the internal revenue system, and sold public lands. Jefferson was able to pay off half the enormous debt from the Revolutionary War during his eight years in office. Andrew Jackson sold public lands in order to pay off the total national debt and have a surplus. He "returned $28 million to the states."

This information is especially interesting at this time because the conservatives in the House of Representatives are currently in a budget battle with the liberals/progressives in the Senate and White House about cutting spending and lessening debt. Wouldn't it be nice if we could find another Thomas Jefferson or Andrew Jackson in our day?

Tax on Education

I wonder if the intellectuals in our federal government and their supporters in the educational systems of our nation will follow the example of the politicians in the United Kingdom. In an effort to bring more revenue into the bloated socialist government, Vince Cable, Business Secretary of the current British Government, made a proposal to tax university degrees for the lifetime of the recipient. The tax will be based solely on the fact that the graduate received a degree and the amount of tax would be based on a percentage (amount has not yet been determined and of course not permanent) of the graduate’s income. Those who earn higher incomes could end up paying as much as $24,000.00 every year simply because they earned a university degree. I can see another reason for a socialist government to tax education – redistribution of wealth. Only a socialist would think that those who were smart enough and wealthy enough to go to a university should share their higher incomes with those who are unable to obtain degrees. This is just one more way to dumb down a country and bring the people more and more under the control of the government. A big problem with this plan, however, is that the golden goose will gradually but eventually stop laying golden eggs. As more and more people realize that a university degree simply makes them poorer rather than better off, fewer people will want to obtain degrees. Since the United States government has fully taken over the student loan program, it may not be long before some idiot of a progressive will suggest this new source of revenue. Of course, the progressives would probably say that a tax on degrees is necessary to lower the cost of tuition at the schools of higher education. This is just one more reason why we must weed out the progressives and far left liberals from all elected offices. Now is the time to search out and support people who are willing to stand on constitutional principles and to shrink the size of our federal government. You have been warned that this could happen. I encourage you to stay alert and ready to fight for the right to education without taxation.

Census Every Ten Years

Provision 18 of the United States Constitution is found in Article I.2.3: "A census of the population of each state shall be taken within three years after this Constitution is adopted, and every ten years thereafter." This provision gives every American citizen the Right to representation in Congress according to population in his state and to have the population corrected by a census taken every ten years. The first census took place in 1790 and has been repeated every ten years since. The Founders original idea was simply to count the population in each state. The federal census has evolved into a major investigation to determine many social and economic facts. States and individuals have fought the tendency to gather more and more information on citizens, but the Supreme Court has implied that the federal government remains within its authority. The census is very important because representation and taxes are determined by the population of each state. Parents could teach this information by telling their children how many people have joined their household since the last census was taken in 2000.

Taxes and Population

Provision seventeen of the United States Constitution is found in Article I.2.3: "Direct taxes (levied against the property of private individuals) shall be apportioned among the states according to population." This provision means that citizens have the Right to be taxed equally no matter where they live. The discussion on this provision was about whether population was the best measure to use to decide taxes. If population was chosen, should slaves be counted? The delegates to the Constitutional Convention determined that population was the most equitable measurement to determine taxes. There was a problem when discussing the slavery issue. The Southern states wanted to count slaves when determining their population for representation but not count them when determining their population for taxes. As a compromise, the delegates agreed that each slave would be weighted at three-fifths in determining population for both representation and taxation. This was merely a compromise deal and not intended as an insult to slaves. Representation and taxation would counter balance each other and made for a more honest and reliable census. States wanted the highest numbers of representatives as possible and therefore would count as many people as possible. At the same time, they wanted the lowest amount of taxes as possible and therefore would keep population numbers as low as possible. Parents could divide family into two groups and assign "taxes." Any item - jelly beans, cheerios, whatever - could be used as taxes. Each group could be assessed a certain number - maybe twenty - items. If a group has only two members, each member of that group would have to pay ten items, but in a group of five each member would pay only four items. This would not be equal taxation.
