Families, communities, and
nations are strengthened when parents are wise enough to use the tools given to
them. In January 2019 The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints introduced
the new “Come, Follow Me” curriculum. The leaders in my ward gave each family a
copy – or two – of the manual. It can also be found at LDS.org.
This week we are studying John 7-10,
which contains several interesting stories. There are ideas for teaching this
information in the section titled “Ideas for Family Scripture Study and Family Home
Evening.
John 9 contains the story of Jesus
healing a man who had been blind since birth. There is a suggestion to have the
family act out the story. There is another suggestion to show the video “Jesus
Heals a Man Born Blind” (LDS.org). If using the video, it is suggested that the
video be paused occasionally in order to read the scriptural account. After
acting out the story or viewing the video, the family could then discuss the
principles learned through the activity.
John 10 contains the parable of the
Good Shepherd. The suggestion is made to have family members draw pictures of
the various people and items mentioned in the story, such as a thief, a door, a
shepherd, a hired hand, a wolf, and a sheep. Then read the applicable verses
and discuss the principles taught by the Savior.
In this time of wickedness, wise
parents will teach their children using the tools given to them. The “Come,
Follow Me” curriculum is a valuable tool with which wise parents can strengthen
their family and then strengthen their community and nation.
