My VIP for this week is Stacy Langton, a Virginia mother who became famous after attending a school board meeting. Langton chastised the board of Fairfax County Public Schools in September for permitting pornographic and pedophilic materials in the high school’s library. According to The Blaze, the material included “graphic imagery and dialogue depicting sex between adult men and teenagers.”
The
school board obviously did not like what Langton told them because they cut off
her mike while she was speaking and before her time expired. She was not
allowed to complete her remarks or get answers for the presence of pornography
in the school library.
Langton
happened on the books when she visited the library with her son while he
checked out a book. The librarian helped them to find the book and did not say
anything about parents not being allowed in the library. However, the assistant
principal contacted Langton and told her that no parents are allowed in the
library.
The
school board acted after the board meeting because at least two books mentioned
by Langton were pulled from school circulation, according to a quote from the Fairfax County Times.
The books in question are “Lawn Boy” by Jonathan Evison and
“Gender Queer” by Maia Kobabe. They were available in many high school
libraries and some middle school libraries across the county. A Fairfax County
Public Schools spokesman explained that librarians must follow selection
criteria found in Instructional Services Regulation 3013.2 dated August 2018.
The circulation of these two books has been suspended while a committee reviews
and makes a recommendation on the text, they said. The school board could not
be reached for further comment.
Langton is a hero for exposing the pornography in school
libraries. Other parents and adults should check the libraries in their
schools.
