My VIP for this week is John Durham, Special Counsel appointed to investigate the Russian collusion. He released the final version of his report to Congress today, and his report condemned the FBI for opening the investigation in the first place. As reported by Carlos Garcia at The Blaze, Durham’s task was to investigate the origins of the probe into allegations of collusion between the Trump 2016 presidential campaign and the Russian government.
The
300-hundred-page Durham report declared that the FBI took inappropriate action
when they opened the “Crossfire Hurricane” investigation. Durham reported that
the FBI utilized “raw, unanalyzed, and uncorroborated intelligence” to open the
investigation into the Trump campaign. However, they followed a different
standard when looking at alleged election interference conducted by the
presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton.
Durham
found that the FBI “did not and could not corroborate any of the substantive
allegations” from the Steele Dossier that made accusations against
then-candidate Donald Trump.
“As noted, it was not until mid-September
that the Crossfire Hurricane investigators received several of the Steele Reports.
Within days of their receipt, the unvetted and unverified Steele Reports were
used to support probable cause in the FBI’s FISA applications targeting (Carter)
Page, a U.S. citizen who, for a period of time, had been an advisor to Trump,” the
report says, according to CNN.
As
should be expected, Trump was not supportive of the investigation. He “vehemently
criticized the FBI investigation,” and he “accused the Obama investigation of
manipulating law enforcement” in an attempt to help Clinton win the 2016
presidential campaign.
