Does America Need a Revival of Christianity?

The liberty principle for this freedom Friday concerns a possible Christian revival taking place in America. Numerous ancient American prophets taught that any nation that lives on the American continents will be strong only as long as they worship the God of the land, even Jesus Christ. This conditional success is stated clearly in 2 Nephi 1:5-9 in the Book of Mormon – Another Testament of Jesus Christ:

5 But, said he [Lehi], notwithstanding our afflictions, we have obtained a land of promise, a land which is choice above all other lands; a land which the Lord God hath covenanted with me should be a land for the inheritance of my seed. Yea, the Lord hath covenanted this land unto me, and to my children forever, and also all those who should be led out of other countries by the hand of the Lord.

6 Wherefore, I, Lehi, prophesy according to the workings of the Spirit which is in me, that there shall none come into this land save they shall be brought by the hand of the Lord.

7 Wherefore, this land is consecrated unto him whom he shall bring. And if it so be that they shall serve him according to the commandments which he hath given, it shall be a land of liberty unto them; wherefore, they shall never be brought down into captivity; if so, it shall be because of iniquity; for if iniquity shall abound cursed shall be the land for their sakes, but unto the righteous it shall be blessed forever.

8 And behold, it is wisdom that this land should be kept as yet from the knowledge of other nations; for behold, many nations would overrun the land, that there would be no place for an inheritance.

9 Wherefore, I, Lehi, have obtained a promise, that inasmuch as those whom the Lord God shall bring out of the land of Jerusalem shall keep his commandments, they shall prosper upon the face of this land; and they shall be kept from all other nations, that they may possess this land unto themselves. And if it so be that they shall keep his commandments they shall be blessed upon the face of this land, and there shall be none to molest them, nor to take away the land of their inheritance; and they shall dwell safely forever. (Emphasis added.)

Recently, there was a four-day-long-festival in Washington, D.C. where thousands of Christians gathered to “pray for unity in America,” according to an article by Virginia Grace McKinnon and Angelina Delfin that was published by The Daily Signal. 

The movement, Awaken the Dawn, “focused on worship, prayer, and missions.” The revival was held when thousands of Christians from all fifty states gathered on the National Mall to display their faith. Reporters from The Daily Signal spoke with some of the marchers and were told the following.

“Unity would transform this nation,” said Ashley, one attendee. “Jesus wasn’t a Republican. Jesus wasn’t a Democrat. Jesus was the Son of God…. If we can become united as one nation, as one body for Christ Jesus, then there is nothing that this country cannot do.”

“A kingdom divided cannot stand,” said Diana, who traveled from California for the event. “When we’re united on one accord, God moves and he honors that…. With unity, hearts are softened and God can transform the United States, if we’re just on one accord.”

The authors believe that the United States is experiencing a rise in Christianity not seen in nearly two decades. “According to the Pew Research Center, Christianity had been in decline for 17 years, but since 2023, the decline began to level out and the trend appears to be reversing somewhat.”

Ashley said she feels like God is not done with the younger generation: “People are searching for a higher power, they’re searching for a higher purpose, and that is going to lead them directly to the cross and to Jesus Christ of Nazareth.”

Sarah, visiting from Mississippi and marching with her family, said the country needs to pray for Christian revival in America and around the world. She prays “that the blood of the lamb [Lamb] would be the focus point and that we would return to who Jesus is, he came to wash away our sins and to redeem us.”

If America is secure only as long as its inhabitants worship the Savior, Jesus Christ – and I believe this is true, then America needs a revival of Christianity. Americans must awaken and hear the voice of the God of this land, even Jesus Christ.
