Do You Believe in Life?

Parents are responsible to teach their children about sex and how babies are conceived, and they can strengthen their families, communities, states, and nations by doing so. They are also responsible to instruct their children about the sacredness of life both before and after death. They should teach their children that human life starts at conception (there is life where growth takes place) and should end with natural death.

The annual rally for the March for Life was held today in Washington, D.C., for the 51st year anniversary of the event, and the fight for life continues. On June 24, 2022, the United States Supreme Court ruled that there is no constitutional right to abortion. That is correct: the Constitution does not mention abortion at all, so it cannot legally guarantee abortions. Since that decision, voters in several states have voted to protect abortion in their states, while the legislatures of several other states have acted to bring total bans to their residents.

People on the far left believe that abortions should be legal up until the time of birth, with some people believing that babies born alive should be left to die. People on the far right believe that there should be no abortions at all. I believe that the magic spot for unity is somewhere in the middle. I also believe that a consensus on abortion could be made if people would participate in discussions of the pros and cons of abortion and when one should occur. As long as people on one side will not listen to the ideas and beliefs of the other side and even ban them or protest against them, an agreement can never take place.

I believe that life from conception to natural death is precious and should be protected. However, there should be room in our laws to make exceptions for uncommon situations in life, such as babies conceived by rape or incest, or the health of the mother is endangered. I also believe that pregnant girls and women should be given the truth about their babies. They should have sonograms taken to show them that they are carrying a human baby and not just a clump of cells. Knowing the value of life can strengthen families, communities, states, and nations.

March for Life

            Families, communities, and nations are strengthened when individuals, born and unborn, have the right to life. The introduction to the Declaration of Independence states: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

            The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1973 case of Roe vs. Wade that abortion – the murdering of unborn babies - was legal in every state. Right-to-Life activists held its first March for Life in 1974. The 45th annual March for Life was held today – two days before the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade - at the National Mall and attracted thousands of anti-abortion activists in a movement to save the lives of unborn babies.

            Today President Donald Trump became the first U.S. president to address the activists via video conference as he did so from the White House Rose Garden. However, other Republican presidents have addressed the anti-abortion demonstrators by telephone. Here are some of the President’s remarks. 

As you all know, Roe vs. Wade has resulted in some of the most permissive abortion laws anywhere in the world… It is wrong. It has to change. Americans are more and more pro-life. You see that all the time.

            In his remarks President Donald Trump discussed a bill that would ban late-term abortions. The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act in October 2017 by a vote of 237-189. This “bill includes exceptions for rape, incest, or to save the life of the pregnant woman.” Today President Trump called on the U.S. Senate to vote on the bill. 

I strongly supported the House of Representatives’ pain-capable bill, which would end painful late-term abortions nationwide, and I call upon the Senate to pass this important law and send it to my desk for signing. [He added that the] United States is one of only seven countries to allow elective late-term abortions, along with China, North Korea, and others. [The seven nations are Canada, China, Netherlands, North Korea, Singapore, Vietnam, and the United States. The U.S. could choose a better group!]

            I am a Right to Life supporter because I believe that all human beings have the right to life from the moment of conception until the Lord takes them home. The right to life itself is a direct blessing from Heavenly Father. He alone has the authority to choose who lives and who dies, and no government can usurp that authority. The right to life is one of the reasons that our forefathers fought for independence from Great Britain, and the loss of it is enslaving us now.

            I urge the U.S. Senate to pass the painful late-term abortion bill, and I urge all Americans to join the Right to Life movement in an effort to overturn Roe vs. Wade. This law is an evil one that arose from a desire to limit the number of African Americans born. It has destroyed millions of lives and should be overturned. We can strengthen our families, communities, and nations by bringing the right to life to all people, both the born and unborn.

Culture of Life

                The March for Life was held last week on January 27, 2017. Vice President Mike Pence was the main speaker.  He is the highest ranking official to ever attend the event that has been held annually since 1974 said that he was “deeply humbled to be the first vice president of the United States to ever have the privilege to attend this historic event.” Here are some statements from his ten-minute speech.

                Pence’s main message was, “Life is winning again in America.”

                “Along with you, we will not grow weary, we will not rest until we restore a culture of life in America for ourselves and our posterity.”

                “On Monday, President [Donald] Trump reinstated the Mexico City policy to prevent foreign aid from funding organizations that provide or promote abortions worldwide.” He added that “this administration will work with the Congress to end taxpayer funding of abortion and abortion providers.” He also pledged that Trump’s Supreme Court pick would “uphold the God-given liberties enshrined in our Constitution in the tradition of the late, great Justice Antonin Scalia.”            

                Pence cited the Founding Fathers when he said, “More than 24 years ago, our Founders wrote words that have echoed through the ages. They declared these truths to be self-evident: that we are, all of us, endowed by our creator, with certain unalienable rights, and that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

                Kellyanne Conway, a presidential counselor, also spoke at the March for Life. She said, “Steps away from here, in the White House, a president and a vice president sit at their desks and make decisions for a nation. As they sit there, they stand here with you.” She added, “This is a new day, a new dawn for life. She closed her talk with these words, “We hear you, [we] see you, we respect you, and we look forward to working with you.”

March for Life

                For this Constitution Monday I wish to discuss the Right to Life.  January 22 was the forty-third anniversary of the day that the Supreme Court of the United States decided to legalize abortion.  On January 22, 1973, the Justices made the decisions (Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton) that “abortion would be legal and available on demand across the country.

                “These decisions defied the spirit and the letter of the Constitution; invalidated 50 state laws; denied the truth about the dignity of all human life and the humanity of the unborn; and ushered in the greatest human rights scandal of our time:  an abortion industry that has claimed the lives of more than 50 million of our brothers and sisters … and counting.”  

                One year later on January 22, 1974, the March for Life was born.  Every year on January 22 thousands of Americans go to the Capitol building in Washington, D.C., “celebrate life and to stand up for the truth about the unborn.”  The weather does not seem to matter.  The determination of the defenders of the unborn was shown this year when thousands of people braved “the storm of century” in the March for Life.
